Our MissionTo facilitate collaborative, nurturing, and inspiring opportunities for artists of African American decent as well as artists whose works illustrate the African American political and/or cultural experience. About UsThe New Mexico African American Artists' Guild (NMAAAG) was formed in 1974. Guild members range widely in age, ethnic backgrounds, and in level of expertise in their crafts. NMAAAG artisans include digital and fabric artists, painters, potters, printmakers, sculptors, as well as artists of other various media. NMAAAG was organized, primarily, to give very much needed support to artists who have the common, core culture from which they draw their inspiration, no matter how remote their link to Africa may be, or how different their backgrounds and experiences have been. In New Mexico , great attention has been given to the recognition of the presence of artists of the majority cultures, but very little to those whose ancestors were part of the early development of the South West. It is our mission to give moral, spiritual, and artistic support to each other; exhibit, as a group and as individuals, as often and as widely as we can and to make our presence known. Participants in the NMAAAG have not limited themselves to this particular organization, but are participants in other art groups in the state as well. We feel that there is much to gain from the artistic expressions of all people, and we are working very hard to add to the wonderful art atmosphere that is found here in the Land of Enchantment . Membership RequirementsNMAAAG artists must be at least 18 years of age. Artists are required to pay a yearly fee of $25 USD as members of the Guild. While NMAAAG members ethic heritage is not germane to membership, artists' work should express some relevance to the African American experience and/or the artist be of African decent. Artists are also required to audition for membership consideration. |
